Provision of basic learning tools for 550 impoverished school children in the old city of Nablus

Despite the difficult socio-economic situation, the rates of school attendance in Palestine are among the highest in the region. Enrolment rates of boys and girls are almost equal.

The Palestinian province capital of Nablus, the location of implementation of this project, is situated in the northern West Bank, 60 km north of Jerusalem. It is home to about 120,000 people. Like all other West Bank cities, Nablus is cut off from the outside world by the so-called security wall to the west, and a broad belt of inaccessible areas to the east. Israeli incursions and bombings have destroyed most industrial facilities in Nablus: economic activities all but came to a standstill. More than half of the residents of the old city of Nablus, its poorest quarter, depend on food rations from UNRWA. Average family size stands at eight persons, most of them children of school age.

The 550 school children targeted in this project are forced to study under these conditions. Their impoverished parents, who are hardly able to provide them with food, are unable to afford school bags, stationery and pens and pencils, the most basic learning tools.

Old City Charity Society, a charitable organization that aims to promote public awareness and education as well as economic empowerment of women, proposes to distribute school bags and stationery to 550 impoverished students of all educational phases.

Our children take it for granted that they will receive a new school bag and sufficient stationery at the beginning of every school year. Your generous donation will provide the same to these disadvantaged students who are eager to study and live a better life.
