Digital Cameras Project for Arroub Camp Preparatory Boys School

Background:

Education is highly valued among Palestinian refugees, since it provides them with a fuller awareness of the Nakba and their more powerful enemy, which is perceived as both unjust and oppressive, which is retained in their collective memory. The refugees consider education an important mechanism by which to develop their potential, interact with others to advocate their just cause and defend it on international arena.

The essential role education played in the development of backward societies, are much higher than the anticipated economic calculations. Education plays a substantial role in the formation of a higher level of human capital in the society. Education institutions lay the groundwork for the cognitive revolution of knowledge and sophisticated abilities namely, higher levels of human capital which are the main backbone for progress in this century.

Palestine is a very poor country, Palestinians are almost totally dependent on external aids to keep them survive. The worst situation is in the Palestinian camps where starving took place taken into consideration the highly fertility rate which reach 8.5.

Arroub camp is a Palestinian refugee camp situated in the southern West Bank in Hebron district, 15 km south of Bethlehem. The camp was established in 1949 to offer refuge to Palestinians who were forced to leave their home villages after the the Nakba. At present, 2136 families, a total of 13263 people, live on the camp’s 241 Dunum (0.24 square kilometers). The average family comprises seven members.

Life as a Palestinian refugee is more than a constant struggle these days after the UNRWA recent decision to reduce providing vital aid and support for Palestinian refugees in Palestine. The protests against this injustice decision are still going every day since it started six months ago.

Despite these conditions, scholars all over the world proved that school students tend to perform significantly better in a comfortable and safety environment. Availability of school digital cameras is one of their most basic needs, under the on-going Israeli occupation, and their daily clashes. It follows that a comfortable and safety environment would likely to affect positively the students' academic performance, fulfills their aspirations, meet their abilities, preferences and interests.
